Got some POR 15 in it now. Skim coat of Bondo on the top where the paint had been compromised and the surface rust left some pitting. Plan is to sand and detail the bondo area today and shoot primer. Pics will be posted.

Little water and ashes flushed out the petcock hole. Inspection mirror showed it was fully removed y the way. I used paper towels to soak up the left over wtaer throigh the fuel sending unit hole, then rinsed with a quart of acetone, the n blow dried with the hose from the shop vac on the exhaust side. Blew air in the filler hole for a good 5 minutes to evaporate the acetone left behind. Then i did the POR 15.

Just got up and its been drying all night so its sanding time soon as the morning coffee is drank.

I, too..am slack-jawed at that method, Chuck. I'll take your word on that it didn't warp the metal, but it's not something I would have ever thought to try. Wow. Sometimes drastic measures are needed. I get that.

Wow! I first saw that pic and thought this was gonna be a post about a catastrophic accident... Lo and behold, you did that on purpose! Bonfire mechanics...I like it

Yes guys it work extremely well on all sorts of car parts. I knew a guy that would strip down heads and throw them in the fire for a while to bake off the accumulated crud. Thats where i got the idea from. If it wasnt too thin he would urn it, rinse it off, and rebuild it.

          Anywhooooo...

Heres the tank all sanded out and primed. Did work on the seat trim and the tail cowl as well. My guy ( Aaron ) dropped off a pint of the paint mixed Busas spray card. Im gonna do a test shot on an old real estate sign to see how it looks compared to the one I "eyeballed" a while ago from what i remembered it being. Im willing to bet a weeks pay that Busas is gonna be the winner...LOL

Monday after work Im gonna take that Burgundy stock tail cowl in and have Aaron scan it so we will have a known stock example paint mix code. Then sand the rest of the cowl down and prime it.

EDIT-----I should clarify he would put cast car heads in the fire. NOT aluminum cycle heads.

Again. Wow. I have to admit, your tank doesn't look any worse for the wear, Chuck. Still boggles my mind. Maybe one of the damnedest and most unusual methods I have ever seen..I'm impressed. I have to know, though..how long was it in the fire?

Maybe 10 or 15 minutes Larry. It came out looking somewhat like a blued gun barrel. I had to sand the entire tank to get it spiffy for the bondo and primer. Heres a shot of a sanded area against the "blued" area.

Basically i stood there and watched down the filler hole and when crap stopped flaming up inside i took it off with a set of channel locks.

                    Learn something new every day....

Hope the color looks good....I had to throw just a bit of purple pearl into the clear to get the side tone somewhat close...
Originally the paint is a 3 stage color....a base, then a somewhat candy color, then the clear
A base coat, clear coat only match will be tough. From a distance it looks blue, but closer you get you can see green, and at the right angles in the light you can see purple....

Well the color i had mixed via my recollection is a shade darker than Busas mix. His is a little more bluish where mines a bit on the dark grape side. I liked his better so i slung some color this morning. Give it about an hour and shoot a coat of clear.

Busa....I just want to send you 1000 thank yous for the spray card. I waited 45 minutes and shot a coat of clear and that REALLY added depth and made it pop out!!! Im walking away for the day and letting it cure. Wet sand tomorrow after work and get the decals laid on.

Close up of it in the shade..it gets a tad lighter in the sun but under the door frame its a bit darker. I absolutely LOVE this color!!!

Alke..i am progressively getting better and more patient with myself. I think thats a key element to be patient with yourself and know when to walk away and not rush things. Im sure Larry could chime in and give some better perspectives as Im only a beginner compared to him.

Nah. I've really enjoyed watching your evolving paint skills, Chuck. You took on the task of teaching yourself without fear, made some mistakes, learned from them, and now you're laying out some nice work. You should be proud of yourself, I know I am.
