1982 gs750e bike mods with 750 kat parts

this is a work in progress so I will update as I go so maybe I don't miss anything

Well first off i locked up the 82 750 motor drag racing.

I got a hell of a deal on a 2005 katana gsx750f that had been sitting for a while so I picked it up cleaned the carbs and the motor fired right up. wooohooo.

now Ive been doing measurement and not find much info for swaps using these particular parts so thought I might just as well start writing this up so maybe someone else can benefit from my experience with this.

    1. katana swingarm.
the swing arm on my 2005 750 kat is right at 4" longer then stock.(great since Im drag racing.)

the pivot mount is wider then the stock GS but I was able to cut 11/32" off each side and measure excatly the same as stock gs.( mine cuts came out running just beside the welds on the pivot.)

the pivot blot was the next issue (larger then gs) and after some quick internet research I found that bot h the gs and the Kat use the same 22x29x22
needle bearing. so that being said I can reuse the stock bolt and sleeves after cutting the pivot.

now after removing the needle bearing to cut I found that the pivot tube was not drilled all the way through, and after some measuring with the calipers. cam up with about 24mm of space left after the cut. Solution 1(new needle bearing from suzuki atv 22x29x22) or solution 2 )Bronze bushings with 22x29x22 dimensions). I opted for the bronze bushings since I will be using struts on this bike. If a person had access to a good machinest the tube could be machined deeper to reuse the factor size bearings.

i should be attempting initial install. this weekend or end of next week. will try to post up some Pics then.

    katana swing arm
as we all know the factory gs swingarm.

    update

got to doing the install today.

install bushings with my homeade tool from a piece of 3/4 all thread and some nuts and washers

took a few photo's before I started of both swing arms so everyone could see the difference.

    pic of bike before

    pic of bike after install

I used the original end caps and shaved off what I needed to get them to sit flat on the ends of the pivot

only problem that i ran into with the install was the pin that sticks out from the inside of the frame for the brake return spring interfered with the arm. I just cut it off with a grinder. since i am re engineering the foot pegs anyway.

still have to make some mounts for the struts. and a whole new set of struts.

hope everyone can see these photos.

planning on it with the measurements and research I've done should be an almost direct swap

It is, i did it last year on a 1000, and im plannning to do it again to to my 82 750. The 89 97 600 had 4 pot calipers which worked really well for the bike. I dont have experience with the 750's or 98+ kats though.

Steering stops will need modifying, other than that, even the kat bearings work in the gs frame

thanks for the info on the swap being pretty straight forward.I knew the stops would probably need to be modified but then agian this isn't a stock GS any more. the Bike in my avatar is the one I'm working on (strictly dragrace). The tank is just a shell from a kz and the seat I built from scratch. so unless I have huge travel stop to stop it might be fine. just for information how did you fix the issue with the steering stops?

Drilled and tapped the stops on the triple, ran a steel bolt through it and adjusted it till neither side hit the tank. Then i welded the bolts in place

                        UPDATE:

Katana forks installed. straight forward just like the Beezy said. clipons in and installed. engine Mounts done had to make new mounts for ever location. PICs to Come. one unforseen issue with the swing arm. the space between the frame and the swingarm is insufficient for the actuator rod to the rear master cylinder
