'79 GS850 what did I get myself into?

    Thanks for the response Nessism. I manage to drive the axel out with my large brass punch and hammer. The right side bearing came out seized onto the axel. Axel doesn't seem to be damaged but I still have to remove the bearing. Maybe I'll try heating the inner race with torch.

      So to get the bearing off I pried the plastic seal things off the bearing and cleaned the inside with Varsol so nothing would burn when I put the torch to the inner race. After heat the axel tapped out pretty easily.

        Yesterday I tuned the ignition points: I hooked up the timing light, with engine idling, I put the pickup on #4 plug wire and shone the light into the timing hole. The mark on the points plate was a bit to the left of the other mark. So I moved the main points backing plate till the marks were aligned. Then I put the pickup on #3 plug wire. That mark as a bit to the right of the other mark so I moved the sub-plate for 2-3 points till the marks aligned. Seems to run a bit smoother now.

        Then I figured why not balance the carbs: hooked up my temp gas tank and my Carbtune. Yikes the balance was way out plug I was getting popping at the right exhaust. #3 carb was way out plus I couldn't get it to idle at a steady speed. Shut everything down and took a break to destress. Then I dawned on me; when I connected the temp tank I didn't plug the Petcock vacuum tube. So I went back out, plugged the vacuum and balanced the carbs fairly easily. Now the bike is running pretty good. No knocks or rattles (so far).

        Just have to finish hooking up the Polaris RR (ordered Triumph wiring adapter) and painting the body pieces.

          There is a whining noise coming from my tachometer. I disconnected the cable at the tach and pumped motor oil in until it filled. It is slightly quieter now but still whines louder than, I think is normal. The tach needle is very steady. Is there a way of lubing the tach itself?

            OK, I disconnected the tach cable and sprayed some Teflon chain live up into the drive and that quietened it down.

              Chain lube?
              That'll quieten it down a lot.

                This stuff. I use it on my bicycle chain so it's chain lube LOL.

                    You might get away with it if it's thinner than chain lube.
                    The carrier will have evaporated away and left a light coating of base oil and PTFE, but in these instrument mechanisms more than just a miniscule touch of oil in the right place is usually a bad idea.
