I've never worked on an 1100 but I think I know how you feel about the starter gears. all I can say is I've put that part together many times and never had a problem. Hi Frank. Nice bike!
Question. Do you have the center stand for the bike? Your first pic shows the bike leaning on the side stand, which would cause the starter gears to naturally fall out. If you can get the bike standing exactly straight up or a little to the right (braced of course), the gears will stay in position while you mount the stator cover. If you need a center stand, I have 2 or 3 spares from previous 1100e builds. And too many other parts. pm me thru the site if you need anything.
