Just got myself this GS1000N 1979 for rebuild. It should keep me occupied over the winter months. O ring kit ordered from Robert Barr/cycleorings.com, also going to give inlet rubbers from cruzinimage a go. On first inspection all rubber components will need replacing, brakes tyres etc. The electrics look a mess so the usual mods there. I will get it running and do valve clearance etc. I have oil down plug holes soaking to free up any stuck rings, I have pistons and rings if needed. Last winter I rebuilt a GS850 frame up, was going to sell on but liked it so much it's a keeper !. The VIN # on the 1000 is within 30 of my other GS1000 I have had for 20 years, so they would have been close together in the factory.

That's a 750 or 1100 E (X) I think in the UK tank. Take a look at the Petcock etc. It probably won't be stock as they interfere if they are (or maybe the back of the tank is propped which messes with fuel flow when getting low).
One of the many iterations of my 1000E with the same tank...

Salty, the fuel tap is a Magiverd standard GS1000 one. The holes were elongated. I wont be using that tank or seat there just ugly. I fitted units I had in stock just to have a look, and it looks better. I think I will paint it red but not found a supplier for N decals. The E model decals are different.

Bike's in good shape - chrome especially for the UK! That's a 79/80 tank. I agree they look better with the stock tank. That one was my "sacrificial" tank on a trip to Baja. I knew we were doing doing 40 miles of gravel/sand and lots of bad quality driveways to get to places. Figured it might have taken a nap somewhere en route.
It didn't as it happens
If it's an 80 you may have the same hole placement as the 81/82 16v tank (if it's the same as here...)1980 GS1000G - Sold

Please get yourself a free photo account somewhere and post up some links so we can see your photos in high resolution. Flickr is one such option but there are others.Ed

The bike is an import from the states, don't know which one. It must have been dry and dusty as when it removed the tank and seat it was very dusty. I bought the bike from an importer here, the title has gone missing and the seller is in process of getting me a date certificate. Going by date tags on brake lines and the remains of headstock sticker it was made August 78. I will post a picture of my other 79 GS1000N a little modified and improved, sh775 coil relay cam endfloat mod and front brake upgrade. I have a Flikr account but cant remember my password, oops.

Update on project, I fitted an upto date regulator/rectifier and tidied up the wiring on electrics plate. Headlamp bowl wires are next. The inlet rubbers have arrived from cruzinimage in Japan, quick service from them I only placed the order at the weekend. They look good and come with O rings fitted. The picture is of them with an original at bottom left. Total price Inc post was £45, about the price of 1 genuine unit.20191115_131227.jpg I am going to clean carbs next and get it started to check all is ok, quick ride up the street. Then a total strip to paint the frame etc.My bikes 79 GS1000 1085 checked and approved by stator the GSR mascot :eagerness: and 77 GS750 with 850 top end, GS850g, and my eldest sons 78 GS550, youngest sons GS125. A picture of electrics plate. The reg/rec that was fitted was very small, maybe from a scooter ?. Also the wires were just twisted together and taped, terrible bodge job !!.
