Muratic acid works on gaskets also. Use a q-tip to apply and clean well after use. it can be very corrosive. I had good luck with WD-40 also.Let it sit overnight. Be gentle and be patient with a fresh razor blade. Touch/clean up with scotch brite and WD-40Current Rides: 82 GS1100E, 00 Triumph 955 Speed Triple:twistedevil:, 03 Kawasaki ZRX1200, 01 Honda GL1800, '15 Kawasaki 1000 Versys

Thanks for the tips. I haven't had much luck with the WD-40 despite liberal soaks and repeated reapplication. I still haven't tried the aircraft stripper I picked up (have had a bit of motivational deficiency the last few weeks), but will keep the muriatic acid in mind to try next if this doesn't work.

Before you strip the head apart, try poring about an oz. of gas down the intake and exhaust ports. If it holds gas, it's not leaking. Yes use new half moons on valve cover. Also, get a new o-ring for the tach drive.Current Rides: 82 GS1100E, 00 Triumph 955 Speed Triple:twistedevil:, 03 Kawasaki ZRX1200, 01 Honda GL1800, '15 Kawasaki 1000 Versys
