You got a 650 & soon there wasn't enough power, if you get the GS1000, soon you there will not be enough power, Just find a 16V 1100. I did that same thing, started with a "77" GS750 & thought it was too big for me, less than a year traded for a "78" GS1000 within a year it wasn't enough, traded for a 16V GS1100E. No worries on labor, and the gs1000e says it's an 11.7 quarter mile, changing the sprockets and possibly doing an intake (not pods) could better that number, I'm not too worried about top speed as much as acceleration and I like the look of these bikes alot but hey you might definitely be right! If I can find a 16v 1100 that'd be nice.Ian

well, i was able to call the seller and talk to him a bit about it, sure enough it does leak oil where the cylinder wall meets the crankcase, he has never done any valve adjustments, and its been in storage for about 3 years now, the turn signal flasher is broken as he described the turn signals dont work.
i offered him 800 saying this is non running and non riding, 2500 is a very far fetch for something being that it might not even be able to move with help if the brakes are also locked on the bike. he said theres no way and said 1800 is a price he would do, he said 800 is less than he paid for it and i said when you bought it the bike did run and ride, hes had nobody else except me message him about the bike, so i let him know if he doesn't have any luck to contact me again.
he said hes gonna put gas in the tank and see if it runs, i let him know if it does actually run, i need a video of it idling on its own without choke, and an acceleration so i can hear if its running on all 4, im hoping it doesnt run when he tries to get it going as i know the price is going to stay at 1800 if it does.
i couldnt offer 500, i guess thats my problem, but seeing as the tank alone is worth that much, it wouldnt be hard to make my money back on the bike if i were to have to part it out. get this, his nephew put the price on the bike not him, they seen a gs1000e in "showroom" condition for 4500 so i guess that means a non running, oil leaking one is worth 2500.
there will be updates if any update does happen.Ian

Its thickly repainted and you've no way to know if its rusted or has pinholes or if its got body filled dents.
Goys gonna start a bike with dirty carbs and unadjusted valves just lessens its value more.1983 GS 550 LD

How can you tell the tank was repainted? Also since he's putting gas in it, if he messages me back I'll ask the condition on the inside of the tank.Ian

I'm iffy but I can't say I wouldn't pick it up for that price, I don't think he will let it go away that cheap anywaysIan

It's deffo got a repainted tank - the factory original paint was striped. Who knows what's under that paint - the tank could have been bodged with sealer ten or more years ago, and might be a lacework of rust on the bottom by now.
It's got the early crappy brakes on it, so there's that too.---- Dave

i dont think the guy will call me back seeing as he thinks 1800 is a fair price for it.
if he does and says 800 is okay ill have to go over there to check it out, i have family right by there so i could just stay for the weekend so it wont be purely just to go there and back, 5 hour drive roundtripIan

That looks like a lot of headaches even if you could get it for $500.
I've read every post of this thread and there's just no way that bike is worth any more than $500, unless the tank is pristine and I have serious doubts that it is.

Forsure, If he does call and accepts my offer, I'll possibly go check the bike out and find out what I can other than just seeing pictures where there's issues with the bike, I don't want to buy a complete piece of junk and while many of you think it is (probably right), if what has been spotted out are the only issues, and it has the right compression and spark, I may pick it up.
We will see though, again this guy's price is way too far up there, and I also have other thoughts of what I'd like to get for a second bike to keep.Ian

"What do you think would be needed? Sorry, I just see a complete bike, it ran when it was stored but it has been 3 years,"
Let's see....
Base gasket and head gasket, Rings, carbs rebuilt, tank sealed, new hoses, new paint, tires, valve stems, brakes rebuilt, new brake lines, r/r replacement, cables replaced, turn signals, grips replaced, seat cover, oil and filter change, valve adjustment.....That would get it rideable. All that shouldn't take very long, or cost much!
Hope you're good with wrenches!
Need I go on?Last edited by 1978GS750E; 02-06-2022, 09:38 AM.Ron

Hey Ed, Did you missed the positive points for this bike from post # 22..."It's possible that the owner before him kept up on its service intervals"...Wouldn't that make all your concerns a mute point??1983 GS1100E, 1983 CB1100F, 1991 GSX1100G, 1996 Kaw. Ah yes, the PO of the PO. The mythical one who diligently serviced the bike every x-thousand miles.
I don't think anyone's ever met one of those.
Fwiw, after a decade-long layup, my 80 bike absorbed nearly a grand in updates and essentials to get it back into apple pie order.---- Dave
