When King Kenny first went to Europe, all the riders were only paid start money. Which was not that much. The organizers made all the money back then.

Roberts got all the riders together and they as a group demanded more money, and prize money. At one race in 1979, after Roberts won he handed the trophy back to the organizers and told them to stick it up their a$$ on the podium. They got his point after that and for the first time some decent money was started to be paid out to the riders!!

King Kenny was the last person to win the premier class championship in his rookie season.

Looks like that new kid might pull it off this year. Its only been 35 years since The King did it!!!

I have lots of respect for *all* those guys back then... Roberts, Sheene, Doohan, Gardner, Rainey, Schwantz, Lawson, Mamola... they all knew how to ride! I'm just disappointed that I didn't follow it back then so haven't watched enough...

That was my point agemax. The riding styles have evolved with the bikes, and the new generation of riders are using more body English to maintain higher corner speeds requiring the dragging of elbows etc. Paul
