    78 gs 1000

I am building a land speed bike based on a 78 GS 1000. Can anyone tell me if there are 17" wheels that will fit in place of the 19/18. thanks.

    Stock wheels?

The E model comes with a 17" rear

No 17" fronts in the GS/GSX series, you'd have to go to 90's or newer vintage wheels.

What class are you aiming for?
    1978 GS 1000 (since new)
1979 GS 1000 (The Fridge, superbike replica project)
    1978 GS 1000 (parts)
    1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)
    1981 GPZ 550 (backroad screamer)
    1970 450 Mk IIID (THUMP!)
    2007 DRz 400S
    1999 ATK 490ES
    1994 DR 350SES

Thanks for the direction. I hope to race in the APS-PG. The motor is bored to 1098 cc so I will likely be competing with the 1200cc's.

The normal set up is to swap to a 90's complete front end from a GSX/R or Bandit and use an 1100 swing arm and adapt the same rear wheel

The complete front end swap avoids the usual disc/caliper compatibility problems. At the rear, a 4.5inch wide rim is much easier to fit than a 5.5. If the cush drive is narrowed and a 520 chain and sprockets are used, a simple spacer behind the front sprocket will get the chain line right.Running a 160/60 is quite feasible.
I'm assuming that you want to go 17inch for tyre choice ? The OE 17 rear is too narrow for most good modern 17's - and while the 18in rear from the 1100 is wider, there's not the choice in 18in tyres...

The tires are the issue. I need w or z rated tires and there is a good selection for 17" wheels but not for 18 or 19' s. The bike is highly modified at this point so a front end change in not possible at this point. Shallow pockets!

Well with bearing changes to suit the 15mm axle, most 17in fronts are possible. At least you will probably only have one disc and caliper to worry about. Us roadracing guys have it a bit harder....

OK let me get this right. You already modified the motor but now you want to skimp on modifying the chassis to go the speed you want to go modifying the chassis correctly to handle the speeds that you want to go would be the first thing you do before you put a motor in it if you really do want to go fast. What kind of speeds are you talking about? how modified is the motor?
I just bought a Mitchelin Pilot Road 3 that is w speed rated in a 110/80/18" for my drag bike I would almost bet that they make the matching rear tire
