Proper 1/4 mile gearing stock 1100e
Looking for recommendations for a starting point for sprocket sizes. Current gearing is 18-46 (530 chain). I have about 1 1/4 inch of available rearward adjustment, and I want to be able to put the larger front sprocket back on after the race, so no chain changes. Thinking maybe 14 or 15 will work without removing links? Also, is it worth it to strap the front down a bit on a stock except for pipe bike? I used to regularly drag race my KZ900 back in the day, but that was almost 40 years and 120 pounds ago....sigpic

Running a 530 chain you can use a smaller front sprocket but pay attention as to if it ( the chain) clears your swing arm or not, I think 16 is the smallest you can safely go with out it rubbing the swing arm pivot. But some one with more knowledge may chime in.I have a swing arm that the previous owner didn't pay attention to and it wore right through to the bearing race.1984 GS1100GK newest addition to the heard

I know you can put the 15t on the front 14t will rub. I think a 16/50 works good with a mild built motor so the 15/46 is equal or close to 16/50 gearing. Just buy a 15t and switch back and forth. Yes strap the frontendMy stable

stock gs1100 engines=2.8/1 ~ 3.0/1 ratio will get you using all 5 gears but be a handful at the launch (hit) - inspect what sprockets are available because there is more than 1 way to achieve your goal.
as you make more power the best ratio will go down for 5 speed quarters - or if you only want to use 4 gears - or if the launch is too much and you cant stop wheelieing stay with the lower ratios.
18/46=2.555-1,, 17/46= 2.705-1,, 16/46=2.875-1 or as advised from stet- 16/50=3.125SUZUKI , There is no substitute

I would agree with Trip get a 15t and 16t and then you can find out which one works best for how you launch. You might like going thru in 4 gears. I myself prefer a lower rpm launch with lower gearing for a mostly stock street bike and control the wheelie with the throttle and cover the rear brake. It helps save the clutch too.My stable
