    Clutch basket mods

I wanted to have a look at my clutch before I go out and abuse it. As I suspected from the noise, the big nut was loose and quite a wobble to the basket. Now that I have it apart, is an APE nut and welding overkill for a stock motor, or should I do it anyway? Do one of you guys (Ray, Trippivot) provide mods if needed? Small springs are tight, big springs have about 2mm radial play. Rivets are tight, no discernible grooves in basket. Really, this thing looks nearly new....

Yes, install the nut, & I build the clutch hubs also when you are ready to build one.

Thanks guys. I will get the nut now, looking at a couple baskets on epay, maybe I can get one cheap. Otherwise it sounds like a worthwhile thing to do. I see now what you mean http://www.ebay.com/itm/1980-1983-SU...hU1oDA&vxp=mtr

yes the backing plate is good insurance - I can do it - but on a scale of 1-10 it is about a 4 after you have the tools press, welder, hand grinder

So anyone recognize this work? Picked up a truckload of stuff from a fellow GSR member locally, this was among the items. Seems to have upgraded springs but the stock backing plate, and retaining tabs added. What do you think?

I have NO idea why anyone would go the the expense of springs & tabs, & that amount of work, & use the STOCK backing plate!!! A thicker backing plate is the entire point of the whole modification!!!!

pretty sure that is a hd backing plate, looks thicker then the one next to it in your picture, seem to stick out further where the tabs lock in. whats the distance between the backing plate and ring gear on both?

I measured the distance from the plate to the gear, same on both. No worries, I will just treat it as a slightly improved stocker. I am not unhappy with my purchase, at least I got the chrome moly nut... I noticed when I first looked at it that it looked like a stock plate, I think I mentioned it. I will just keep looking. I have enough bikes now that one can be a dedicated racer I can trailer to the track.

I don't even remember having a hub like that. How long ago was this? I know for a fact I didn't build it as I have never used the tabs like those. I know Vance & Hines built some that way back in the day. When did I sell this hub to you, I go through so much stuff I really don't remember it.

That hub will work fine in a street bike, that isn't a big motor. I just wouldn't throw a LOT of HP at it.
