Trick of painting recessed areas and not the area around it.

This works every time and quite easily. If you have say a part like the Suzuki emblem that has chrome or gold lettering but the background is black but has faded and you want to repaint it without painting the chrome and without using tape and a small brush use vasoline. I take a small amount on the tip of my finger or q-tip and i smear a light coat on the chrome lettering or where i dont want the paint to stick. I then sprayed the entire emblem black and let it dry, all it takes is your finger or a paper towel and the paint on the chrome whipes right off, the vasoline prevents the paint from sticking and you are left with nice clean chrome with the area surrounding it painted perfectly. I did this on my start/ run housing that is metal, I put a light coat of vasoline around the face and then painted the engraving, the paint whipes right off leaving a perfect detail of the engraving. this works anywhere in the house you dont wish to tape like hinges on a door or striker plate, the paint wont stick and it doesn't leave a mess the paint will actually dry but literally flakes off. Beats taping and using a micro brush to paint engravings.

I'd like to try it the other way. The Chrome is gone on my side cover emblem. I'd like to pain the top of the "850" and leave the recessed area around it black. Think that would work?

Painting chrome area

If the background area is what you want to be left intact and paint the chrome instead, i don't see why it wont work, the key is getting the vasoline in the grooves and recessed parts. you don't have to leave just a thin layer, even if you filled the grooves with vasoline it would be ok as it would wipe out with a q-tip or whatever, maybe a tissue with a toothpick to clean it out. Just make certain that the chrome area or whatever you want the paint to stick to is perfectly clean, any residue and the paint will whipe off, so it is just a matter of technique, where there is vasoline there will be no paint, keeping that in mind you are limitless on what you want to paint.
I also painted some of my items with high temp paint, it cost like $4-$6 a can and what you have to do to make it adhere better is put the parts (METAL ONLY) in the oven @ 400deg for like 30 min. It will stink up the house a little, make sure your wife is out of the house..lol... I painted my carb covers, valve cover etc.. a nice satin black and after I baked it in the oven the paint seem to be more resistant to scratches and chipping. No plastic obviously.

How 'bout this: paint the whole area the color you want the raised part, then smear the vaseline on the raised part and then paint the recessed area black. Once wiped off the raised part will be the color you want and you don't have to wipe vaseline in the recesses and then scrape it out again.
