ever lost the front end bad in mid twistie....

dunno if this is actually a tip... but it saved my sorry ar$e recently.... so I thought I would share it....

A quick trip on the 1000S quite unexpectedly turned into a 6 hour mad ride into nowhere I had ever been....

through a couple of the local mountain ranges with gr8 twisties and surprisingly the gods of "get the hell out of ur house and ride ffs" were shining and most of roads were to myself....

a brief stop in a pub in a town I had never been to and off again - this time finding my way home through twisties I was more familiar with...

with the call of home and the rush of spirited riding still strong... I was perhaps giving the old girl a good fist full of throttle at every opportunity without being mad stupid about it....

a lil scraping of pipes and boots here and there - a lil skipping out accelerating through the bends - ... but nothing mad....

I come to the first of a few hairpin bends coming down a mountain on the way home....

its a downhill left hander posted @ 30kph (remember we drive on the left here - so its the inside line of the bend Im on... cliff face to my shoulder - crazy drop across the other lane)

I come into it quickly enough Im leaning over hard but not quite enough to be scraping anything....

...then as I get 2/3's round I see the road (my lane) is covered in gritty sand mebe from some sort of dump truck....

no sooner do I see the stuff and am in it thinking this could be bad if I lose grip.... when the front wheel slides out....

it happened so fast and the rest was almostall reactionary...

because I was already leaning kinda low.... when the wheel lost traction it immediately dropped my lean to where the peg then my foot were digging hard into the bitumen... as it tried its best to lay right down....

for a milli second I thought either the pegs gunna snapp or more likley my foot with the force of the peg behind it will just break or be torn right off....

my immediate reaction was CHIT... cant brake, not gunna be good going down here... and without thinking I stood up with all my weight on my right leg on the right highside peg

... and at the same time reefed with all the considerable weight and grunt I could muster lifiting the bars up and of course the bike to an upright position...

the second i got the bike upright with no lean the front agin had traction even though i was still clearing the silty sandy chit on the road....

    so in summary

    first tip....
dont panic - dont brake in panic - dont let go in panic.. its is weird how instant adreinaline slows time when ya close to a bad result...

2nd tip.... use what ever weight/strength you can muster to stay with the bike and right it.... - meaning do what ever you have to stop from going under it...

3rd tip... (personal choice) I sooo love my choice to wear my steel cap work boots riding - not as comfortable as some of the brand name squid stuff available - but geebuz - ... they saved my sorry foot/toes from some nasty grinding....
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
anywhoooo - just thought i would post the experience... I dont remember covering this lil scenario in any driving/riding course Ive done so far....

im sure if it happened to me another 10 times i would drop the bike every time... but it shows there is even the slightest chance of getting through it provided the panic dont rip into the brakes at the very most wrong times...

    cheers

    Phark

p.s. the rest of the ride home was just as spirited but with 10 fold concetration lol....:-\"

LMAO - noo noot mad - just a survivalist....

and since the yellow speed signs before bends are guides rather than maximum speed limits, and since we ALL know they are always half the speed meant to be posted for bikes I wasnt technically speeding.... much.....O :-\"

          Been there, done that.

I posted it a year or so ago when someone was asking about how to handle it, and a few disagreed with me, saying that a highside was too close.

They were right, of course, as a mistake would have taken the bike...and me..right over, but it worked perfectly when it had to.

My experience was nothing like as dangerous, as there was no cliff edge to fall over, but the rest was similar, and the reaction was almost the same.

The two differences were that the pavement was not sandy, but so smooth it was shiny, and the other was immediately after bringing the bike upright and regaining traction, I had to bend it over again to continue the curve. Admittedly, the bike was not pushed down as far, and I took a wider angle than initially planned.

Maybe you should try driving on the right side of the road.

An old biker friend of mine told me once about his wife at the laundrymat, washing his drawers... from the person next to her: "That sure is one big baby you've got"

Glad you managed to stay rubber side down, Phark... we all know you wouldn't be pecking at the computer with one arm... we all know your good arm would be busy with other things Bad enough we're losing you for a week to fishing!!!
