Screwed Up Screws ( Dead Men )

When I was a kid I worked for an old german machinist who knew more tricks than a circus monkey. I had forgotten about this but another thread brought it to mind

To remove screws, bolts etc. that have no way of gripping them, drill a hole into the dead man, about half the diameter of the DM. The depth should be about one and a half times the dia. of the hole. Using a rod of similar material and a very close fit to the hole, bottom the rod out and turn the rod with a drill motor in the direction to remove the DM.

The rod will weld itself to the DM and bring it out. If the DM is cross threaded or rusty heat is sometimes useful

(Usual disclaimer) I don't gurantee sucess every time but I have never seen it fail.
Working...
