Yes, you can leave the 5mm adapters in place with caps. As a matter of fact, on my bike I made an aluminum port for the left side of the bike where these vacuums are readily available for me to tune and experiment. Instead of using water or mercury can you use a larger hose - put in a ping pong ball - then attach it to smaller hoses?
