    hole punching in gasket

if you're making a gasket and you need a screw hole and you dont have a punch, use the metal cap of a fuse. the fuse with two metal end caps and a glass tube. hold a match under the metal part to melt the solder and hit it with a hammer to punch the hole.

Cool, I never thought of that, I always just use alittle piece of metal brake line. Seems to work pretty good too.

If you have access to a shooting range collect a few spent shells of different sizes and you can add them to the fuse caps.
Stretch the gasket paper over a piece of old seat vinyl and tape it down and tap out the holes, then cut the gasket out with a sharp artists knife. If you are going to the effort rather make two, especially for those parts that can be taken off easily later.
I never thought about the fuse ends though, thanks.

Or pick up a hollow punch set.

I have several different calibers of rifle/pistol brass in my toolbox(es) for this exact reason. The .22LR and 10mm seem to be the ones I use the most. Luckily, I don't have to make gaskets very often.

Because if you don't use spent shells, your holes will be a little bigger than you planned.

Handheld paper hole punch from Staples, .99

You can make large holes by taking a few bites.

If you have a leather supply store near you try them. They usually carry a selection of hole punches and you can likley get a set or one with interchangeable sizes. If you don't have any leather supply stores wander in to a hobby store or crafting supply place Like Michaels ( here in Ontario at least).

                    Hope this helps.
                    Cheers,

Paper punch works well assuming you need a hole that size or if the exact shape of the hole is not critical. Pieces of tubing make good punches as well. Match the diameter of the tube to the diameter of the hole you are trying to make. Sharpening the edges helps also. Made some float bowl gaskets and punched the screw holes this way. Worked like a champ. A paper punch hole was too large thus the need to improvise.
