Cam Timing: Cheap Dial Indicator Extension

Degreeing your cams using a standard 1" Machinist Dial Indicator can be a frustrating process because the diameter of the indicator tip is to large to easily fit between the cam lobe while still making positive contact with the valve bucket. My indicator tip was pretty scarred from previous sessions and needed to be redressed.

I needed a thin extension for the Dial Indicator and found my solution @ Ace Hardware. I removed the dial indicator tip and found a M3 X 50 screw threaded into my Dial Indicator. I then cut the head of the screw off and filed it down. This extension made my cam degreeing process much smoother because the screw diameter was much smaller and the dial indicator extension never touched the cam thus ensuring a repeatable timing results.
