    Clutch Hub Tool

    I'm always happy when I don't have to buy a specialized tool for jobs that I don't plan on performing often. During some clutch work on my 77 GS550, I realized I needed a tool to take the clutch hub off to do some inspection. Since I'd just swapped out plates, I figured I could use one of the old metal plates to be a tool to hold the hub in place while I took the impact wrench to the nut holding the whole thing together. Well, it worked great. I've attached some pictures. Feel free to email me for the hi-res ones if you'd like. Basically, I put some aluminum stock near the bottom 3rd of the rotor separated by about 5/8 inches using washers. It slides on just as a clutch plate will and if you sandwich the aluminum stock between the footpeg and the kick start shaft, it'll hold the basket nicely.

    Again, I've just done this on a small GS550 so I don't know how it would work on the larger bikes. Go dig out one of your clutch plates from the trash and try it out....

    I don't pretend that I'm the first person who's tried this by the way....but good luck and I hope this helps...

      Yes.. the other way is to bolt an old steel & an old fibre plate together. That's a sort of "hands free" version of the same.

        I didn't think of just bolting the 2 plates together but that's a great idea!

          I think either way works good. It's a bit of a pest getting the two plates lined up right if you go that route.

          I've seen your way brazed or welded before, that's the first time bolted. Nice to see it works ok.

            If you have a compressor and air wrench (thats what its called here in the UK) you can jam rags between the inner and outer clutch baskets and save on having to make a tool.

              sorry to be ignorant, but what exactly does this tool do?

              Reason why I ask is; I took apart my entire motor and at no single point did I have trouble putting and taking off the clutch assembly (hub and all) off and on.

              I'm a bit worried now that I might of messed things up.

                This tool just helps hold the inner clutch hub so you can take your torque wrench or impact wrench to the nut to get it on and off.
