Not that a hairline scratch would matter should you accidentally slip, but if you're concerned you can spray a little WD40, let it sit, and hit it with compressed air to blow it out.
I used a tooth pick... lol.

Just poke down into the o-ring. If it's that bad, it will just crumble and fall out.

I used an exacto knife, stabbed it and rotated the knife. Pulled it right out. I imagine a pick set would work too.
Mine were rock hard and flat as well.

I've never tried it, but a friend told me he used a small fish hook. Straighten out the bend and stab it. He used one to get the old rings out of the quick coupler on his pressure washer.
