I have read quite a few threads about problems with excess oil coming from the valve cover breather and thought I would share what I have learned about this problem.
I aquired a "new" valve cover at one time and installed it and found that it spewed oil from the breather cover like it never did before (totally coated the carbs, filters and as far back as the battery). At one point I remembered the difference between my old and new valve covers. And that was the old one had steel wool like stuff in the top under the breather cover as in the pic below, and in the fiche #13. My new valve cover was missing that, so I took it out of the old one and into the new one, ran the bike and no more oil coming from the breather
It also matters how you orient the gasket, so that the oil/air mixture has to take the farther route to get to the outside. The wire mesh catches the oil and it just drops back down into the crankcase.
This is on a '80-83 4 valve engine, others might be different.
