    carb boot o-rings

Just a simple trick to getting out stoubern dried out carb o-rings. Forget about useing a scribe, my tip bent on the first try.

Grab your utility knife, sink the blade on a diagonal accross the o-ring gentley until it stops. Pry down some and it should pop up.

After the o-ring pops out i grabbed some 150 grit emry and on a flat table top i sanded the surface flat like new (probley not a big deal but it looks good)

Make sure you spray out the groove with carb and choke to remove the aluminum dust after sanding.

There you have it, hope it helps.

What about freshening up the groove to be sure its a smoothly sealing oring all the way around??? Sometime a simple spary of carb cleaner isnt enough. I take a small wire brush that i get from the dollar store (they look like wire bristled tooth brushes ) and clean the grooves as shiney as I can get them. Also a bit of freshening the rim on the engine is in order. Clean everywhere means no leaks.

Good points, also a good blast from an air compressor helps alot. Forgot to mention that but not everybody has air.

Before I found the little brushes at the dollar store i toyed with the idea of dripping some berrymans in the grooves and letting them sit overnight..didnt think the berrymans would be too good on the rubber so a full on dip was off the plate. Then i saw the brushes and the light went on.

          Chuck et al,
A slight segue if I may. If anyone has bought new boots recently, I'm shopping for best price and availability. However, I'm changing them regardless of price. I think mine are original 1981 vintage and about as soft as a hockey puck.
          Thanks,
          Niels

What bike? What model? Which engine? Which carbs? What year?
Those answers would help quite a bit.

I found Boulevard and G&S Suzuki have the best prices on boots while you'll do better to get the orings from www.cycleorings.com

Nice to know the year, but also need to know the bike.

I got boots for a 650 that were about $24 each, but recently saw others for a 750 that were closer to $30 each.

Take a good look at the parts fiche when ordering. The 650 boots that I got did not include the o-rings, but the 750 boots I checked on for someone did include them. No sense in getting a second set if one comes with the boots.

                          Steve,
Got another question for you: "How high is up?" Sorry about that; Mine is an '81 GS450EZ. Since I posted, I found them at Boulevard Suzuki for $25 and change. That's not a bad number and other things I've gotten from them seemed to be competitive. Thanks.

"Up" is merely higher than where you are, and can be as high as you want, but that has NOTHING to do with this discussion.

Not sure what you meant by that, but it sure came out of NOWHERE.

Just poking fun at myself for asking a stupid question without identifying my bike. It comes from my book of stupid questions titled," How Long is a Piece of String?
