If you've never seen one, a Bassani is similar to a Yoshimura "903". Here's a link to a few photos I took.

Hmmm...that looks a lot like my mac exhaust.

Yes, the mac is similar but there are differences in the muffler can and the mount.

hey keith, i just rebuilt a set of 29mm's for my 1000, the only problem i ran into when finding parts to rebuild was the paper gasket for the throttel block, so i just drew somthin up in cad printed it on some loose leaf paper ( was about the same thinkness, white printer paper was to thick) and cut it up with a xacto blade and the carbs seem to work well, i ordered some new needles and float bowl gaskets from motorcycle carbs.com every thing else seemed in good shape. they have cut aways for sale there to but for 70$ a pop i'll see how well my 1.5's work. i have the carbs installed on the bike and the bike does start very quickly but the rest of the bike is not in riding condition so i have no idea how the carbs will work after the rebuild at speed, and they still need syncing.

i'll keep you posted, if i was you keith i would buy a set of 29's and play around with them, you have a set of 26's that are all set up so when you get mad you can just bolt the 26's back on and ride.

first timer, Thanks. Another question, have you heard what gas mileage difference I can expect from a properly jetted set of 29's vs 26's?
According to Motorcyclist Mag', back in the early 80's you could order pre-jetted 29's for the 1000 from V&H. They were set up for use with a V&H megaphone pipe/K&N ovals/1085 pistons. I sure would like to get a set of those or at least track down what the jetting set up was. I called V&H a few years back and I was unable to find this jetting info, but I know it must exist somewhere?
PS: are you trying to say that getting mad is a part of jetting? :?

I ran a vacuum takeoff for my smoothbores out of the manifold and it works just fine. You can make a nice nipple by drilling through and turning down an extra-long allen bolt (run a nut and o-ring up the threads). You can also use your OEM petcock without vacuum (ala Pingel) by turning it to PRI when running and anything else when not. IMHO, your stock petcock is the best thing to have. I feel the Pingels are more of a problem than they are worth unless you need more fuel flow (top fuel or GSXR 1100).

I have to agree with this. I am positive that if I had one I would never remember to turn it off, even once! I must have a vacuum petcock on my bikes. I've never owned one that didn't have one on it and have also never had an issue. Just my run of luck I guess.

As for the 29's I can tell you what I have been told when I was looking for a set. Once installed and setup properly they are going to rock but they are a lot more work than a set of CV or VM carbs. And for a street bike you may be better off with a set of larger CV carbs than with the smoothbores. But it is just a mater of choice and the owners level of willingness to maintain the setup. As of that I opted to go with a set of 34mmcv's off of a 1980 GS1000 and I am feeling good that this setup will prove to be a lot more "streetable" and require less maintenance for me.

Just sharing info from guys I trust. Not saying anything here is a bad idea. Except for the petcock, my comments there are from my experience. I know there is no way I would ever remember to shut that thing off.

sorry keith, i haven't heard of any gas milage info on the 29's, and since my bike is in peices i can't tell you what i get.

the only info that i found about jetting the 29's for a 1000 was on the sudco website in the exploded diagram they have a box in the lower left with the jetting info. i also have a carb tune manual from the early 80's from sudco that has some more info about the 29's in it, that also has jetting info but doesn't say for what bike or what other mods, ( i can email you that pdf if you like, i had posted it here a couple months back but if you missed it i can resend it)

keep trying to call V & H ask to talk to some of the old guys maybe they would have a better lead, you could also try sudco and see if they have any old guys that rember working out jetting info for V & H, the info has to be here some where.

first timer, thanks for getting back to me. I'm not too far from Sudco. Been there a few times. One of the guys there actually warned me about potential parts problems with the 29's. I should just leave well enough alone. My bike runs strong the way it is. It would be nice to have a good set of 29's though.
One day I want them, the next day I don't. :roll:

I ran some 28mm carbs off a kz1000 on my 1978 gs 1000 because they have accelerator pumps which help the performance at low end a lot. They
can be jetted to make your 1000 very crisp. :P
