Anyone build in a basement???

I built both my bikes in my basement, just don't fully assemble, and you can get the frame out with the help of a friend, I had everything bolted on except the rims/tires and engine. Once the frame was back in the garage those parts were put on and final assembly took place, have a look at my rebuild threads.

I am, even had the sons help in getting the bikes out of the basement when the time came. All the dirty work was done in the garage, the clean work was done in the basement. Actually the painting of the frame on the Yamaha was done in the basement. And before anyone asks, yes the basements were finished....

Dave, I am also married, and we're trying for our first baby together. My daughter is turning 6 in a few days, and my wife is her second mama. She also is the one who made it possible for me to get the GS! She's the best wife in the world!

Gatekeeper, this basement is unfinished so I intend on setting up a plastic enclosure with proper ventilation out the window or stairwell (whichever is easier). Then I could assemble it above ground like you did. How did you paint in a finished basement?!?

Regardless of what you do, where are you going to store it after putting that much effort into it.
Just bite the bullet and get a shed and break the bike down into parts in the shed and then bring them to the basement as you work on it.

Couple of cheap ideas for you: (donate plasma to places life biolife and save up the money to pay for one of these like a friend of mine did)

I gotta tell you the thought of getting rid of the heat this summer in my garage to work on the bike was almost enough motivation to break concrete and dig a basement!
Hope it all works out for you. Also, it's great to hear guys lifting their wives up when mentioning them! Good on you for that one
I'm sorry though, mine's the best!!! She drove with me to Denver just to get this bike, 900 miles round trip, in fact she enjoyed the trip!

The Suzuki was actually painted in the garage with spray cans, had good ventilation, a good mask, and everything was covered up.

The Yamaha was painted in the basement, frame, swing arm, fork tubes and just about everything black, using a brush, the paint used was by POR-15, it can be brushed on and it lays flat and smooth, plus it's a rust inhibitor, also very little smell, and fast drying

my first rebuild was in a basement , I disassembled the bike outside carried it down piece by piece, rebuilt everything over the winter then carried it up the stairs in pieces and reassembled it outside when it was done.

now I have a house with a heated garage ....

I've been working in a backyard and it's a major pain. Not even possible for a "build"...Each time I disassemble whatever, it has to go back together and come apart again. sometimes repeatedly, schedule dependant on weather too, it sucks!...

Just doing the gas-tank (rust-removal,rust-prep then two-part Caswell) alone I bet a few/bunch neighbors probably thought it was "m*th-lab" All the chemicals really add-up and it was messing up the grass and all.

That'd turn me off to "building in a basement" just the gasoline alone...add brake-fluid (I hate the stuff 10x worse than gas), acids, acetone, grease, paint, dust from grinder/metal dust...etc.

Saw another project bike I'd like to buy , but storage not really viable for me.

Been wondering about maybe posting an ad to rent somebody else's yard/ shed. (?)
Haven't worked out details (hours and such) on it and prefer solitude. ...

LOL ad so far: "Need rent space for couple hours per week for my MC project. my tools are sometimes noisey and It'll be plenty noisey running (IF can get it too). There'll be minor chemical spills and any of your grass/plants/pets nearby will DIE. ..." Hmmm... guess we'd have to talk.

Pulled the engine and the top end off to make it lighter up the stairs. Took the frame all the way apart, swing arm off, triple tree off. I kept a cover on the bike outside also. I didn't get it all broken down in one day.

Go for it. Ive built a few bikes in my apartments. I put down old carpet, drain the fluids and never had issues with smells or spills

Landlords take note......another clause needed in your lease agreements.
