Not sure what the absolute max is, but the safest max is 130/90-17.
There is no advantage to fitting a larger tire on the standard-size rim. In fact, there is a big disadvantage.
The tire gets pulled into a tighter radius than it is designed for, and will actually reduce the size of the contact patch on the ground. It may look great, but is more dangerous to ride. And this is not to mention the difference in handling. The wider tire changes the offset of the contact patch when leaning into a turn. Because the center of the patch is farther from the center of the tire, it will feel 'heavier' and handle slower.

Thank you Steve. The stock tire win most likely be cheaper anyway and I wouldn't want to make rideing any more dangerous than it allready is there has allready been 4 people killed in my area in the past 2 months. People just don't see bikes

I have recently fitted a 150/70/17 to my GS750T, I haven't noticed any significant difference in the handling and it corners just fine (my opinion only). The tyre that came off was a 140/70/17. And you're right, it does look better with the bigger tyre.
