I had trouble with the bottom hex screw on the left side and used a broomstick to hold the damper (no indents for socket to fit). It's been a real pain in the butt, but I am learning more each day. I love my GS.

fork difference
I spent the day changing fork seals and oil on a 1978 gs550E and I noticed that the left fork had a small spring on the damper rod but the right one didn't. Is that the way they are supposed to be and if so why?

You're missing a rebound spring on that side
Best to order one and get it put together properly
