Different front Master Cylinder?

1983 GS1100E-Is it possible to replace the master cylinder entirely with either a new one or one from a different motorcycle?

I've recently purchased the bike and after reading the forums conclude that Mastercylinder/ brake system rebuild is a must. I 'm confident in doing the brake lines (braided ss) and calipers but not so sure about the master cylinders.

Any advice on my options?

If you can do the calipers and lines, what's to stop you from doing the master?

It's probably the easiest part of the system.

Master rebuild

I guess the whole thing's amystery to me. I have no idea where to start and am worried abnout the consequences of a sub-par rebuild....

Buying used is a crap shoot. You are better off rebuilding yours.

Open it up and look inside the bore for pitting in the metal. Pits = junk. If the bore looks good order yourself a piston kit from your favorite Suzuki parts source. It's dead easy to rebuild other than getting at the snap ring which is recessed down in the bore and requires some long nose C-clip pliers.

As above - rebuild your MC then you'll know its in top order and you're not just hoping.

Before you rebuild it check the new piston very carefully for marks - the last 2 genuine Suzuki kits I've bought (1 last year, 1 two months ago for different bikes) had marked (scratched) pistons that wouldn't seal. Only found out once I had failed to bleed the system.

I like to use Hayabusa masters on just about everything where my bars are flat.
