brake squeal GS1000

What's the best remedy for halting front brake squeal on my '78 GS1000 - stock calipers/pads, and I recently took them apart, cleaned w/brake cleaner, scuffed pads, etc. They work well enough (for stockers), but squeal upon initial application. They don't have the flat steel backing plate like the rears, so I don't know where the noise emanates from.

Try pulling the pads and gently chamfering the edges all around the pad, sometimes the edge of the pad catches on a slight ridge causing the squeal, the chamfer usually sorts it out.
Some times very hard pads squeal on initial application, only thing there is to chuck the pads and put in softer ones.

try some of that magic goo that comes with new brake pads, put it on the backs to stop squeal....don't know if a shop will just give you some but worth a try.

Hi,

Use a thin layer of brake grease on the back of the brake pad and between the pad shim and brake piston. Something like THIS. A friend of mine gave me some copper/moly compound grease that works really well for the caliper axles and on the back of the brake pads.

The squeal is a high-pitched oscillation of the brake pistons rubbing on the brake pads. The brake grease changes the frequency so that you can't hear it.

Note: Put the grease on the BACK of the pads, not the side that contacts the brake rotor.

Please check the factory service manual, I believe it contains specific instructions on how to grease the pads - only one side should be greased for that model caliper. If you don't have the factory manual, Cliff's sight will help you out.

I have used "disc quiet" or "anti squeal" (can't remember the name but you'll find it) from Kragen on GS pads with great success. It's a red & white spray can. Sprays out a red spray that goes tacky & then you fit the pads.
1 Can of this stuff does about 1 million sets of brake pads I think... (seems to be lasting well in any case). It's about $5.

I am a fan of copper grease on the back of brake pads but that never worked for me with the GS so I figured I'd try this stuff.

I've always used plain old bairing grease on the backside of every pad I install on anything.
My breaks dont squeak.

thanks for all the responses - got some CRC disc brake quiet - small red squeeze bottle $3.99 from Autozone and applied to backs of pads as directed - haven't ridden it yet though!
