86-88 GSXR 1100 swinger in an 82 1100E ?

Does anyone know if the swing arm out of an 86-88 GSXR 1100 will fit into an 82 GS 1100e without any frame mods?

if you weld tabs on the swingarm for the shocks, yes.
if you want to go monoshock you will have to modify the frame.
Do you want this arm to put a large tire on the bike?

I am doing a wheel conversion and already have the wheel, caliper w/hanger and arm of an 88 gsxr 1100. I found an gsxr 1100 swing arm for about half the price of the 82 1100E. I want to keep the stock set up in cause I ever want to turn it back to original, since I never plan on selling it.

I knew I would have to do new shock mounts and remove the mono shock mount. What

I was unsure of is if the rear axle in a stock arm?

Would the adjusters and arm have to be enlarge to fit the 88 axle or would I have to do different bearing, spacers, and bushings to fit the 88 wheel to the stock axle?

If I did use the 82 arm with an 88 axle is the 88 axle going to be to long or short?

I will mesure the axle i have here and compare.
The diameter is the same, 20mm.
i run a 5.5 in a 1100e swingarm on my gs1000.

I use an 1/2" offset front sprocket and a underslung gsxr caliper.

I know this is bringing up an old posting but I was curious about using the 5.5" GSXR wheel on the stock 82 1100e arm. Are you using the 82's axle or the 88's? Did you have to get diff spacers or are you using the 88's/82's spacers? I really would like to eventually upgrade to a larger wheel so I can use a wider tire but don't want to go through the expense/work of changing the swing arm. I don't have any problem w/ fabbing a new brake stay. Thanks!

You use the 82 axle as it is the same diameter. To figure out the wheel spacing you need to aline the front with the rear wheel. Some people have had luck using a mixture of 82 and 88 spacers. You will need to change the forks also. You can mix and match tubed and tube less wheels and would be hard pressed to get an late model wheel to fit in your forks and get brakes to fit.

Well, initially I would just want to swap out the rear wheel. I would eventually get a newer fork for a wider front wheel but that will be a little further down the road since there's more work involved. Thanks for the info though

Also, with the fork change I would want to use a 17" wheel. Would I need to change the instrument cluster to keep the speedo w/ the proper speed or could I just have the speedo gear for that size wheel hooked up to the stock speedo?

Don't mix and match tires doing it can be very dangerous. You really are better off doing both wheels at the same time or not at all.

The gearing in the speedos should be the same so just change to the gear box for what ever year wheel you switch to.

You will also need to watch the fork length cause it will change your ride height. Ground clearance starts to be an issue when you do a swap. There are plenty of threads on here where people have done the conversion and I suggest you read up on them so you can see the issues they came across. All are willing to help you out and answer questions.

Use the axle you have on your bike.This wheel came off a 1991 gsxr 1100 but you can put any oil cooled gsxr wheel very easy in the 1100e swingarm.I have use a mix and match spacer for the gsxr + gs1000 spacer.
I didn't made any machining.do the front and rear at the same time.
The ratio are "standard" on japanese bike.Just put the sppedo drive that came with the wheel.
You mcan see the right side, wheel-gsxr spacer-gsxr caliper bracket-gs1000 small spacer.

I'm assuming the caliper for that wheel doesn't have any problems w/ hooking right up to the 1100e's stock rear brake system?
