Need help removing fork springs from '82 gs450
Does anyone have any pointers for getting the top cap containing the air valve out of the fork tube? It is under a rubber cap on the very top of each fork tube. The piece containing the air valve appears to be press fit(I can't tell whats holding it in)Tags: None

Hi,
I'm not familiar with your forks so all I can do is ask a couple of questions.
Do you see some kind of clip holding that ring stopper? I think it's part number 25 in the fiche below.
IIRC, you have to take out the valve stem, push down on the seat spring (#24), and dig out that C-clip thingy.
Thank you for your indulgence,

Thanks Basscliff, turns out that they're just a few snap rings. But being as rusty as it was, I had trouble getting them out. But we got em out finally, so we'll need to find replacements once we change the oil. Thanks alot though!

Heres a little helper tip to help you remove the old seals. I take my propane torch and gently heat the lowers all the way around till the rubber starts to get a bit soft..the seals pull right out with a gentle pry from a screwdriver at that point. Now if the clearcoat is good on your forks you obviously dont want to heat them up that way.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.
