Best oil weight for a 550?
My manual says that #15 is the best to use, but I'm wondering if anyone has found that a different weight oil works better in an '82 550L. My forks have never worked correctly, but they were way too loose. Should I maybe go to a higher weight?Tags: None

Progressive springs are a popular modification, particularly for the bikes that have air assist forks. For fork oil, 15 weight is popular but some people like to go higher if they are heavy, or conversely lighter as the case may be.Ed
To measure is to know.

15 will beat your wrists to a pulp. I weigh 260lbs give or take and I never use anything heavier than 10wt

I think i have 15 or 20w.
My bikes never felt better...probably because I just installed a fresh set of Avons as well.
Forks are very firm yet Not jolty.
My wrists have also never hurt yet.
I also don't go flying up into the air when I nail bumps.
And I'm only 160lbs.

I've tried 20w and 15w fork oil on a couple of different bikes with either stock or progressive springs. I purchased 10w fork oil today and will definitely be going back at the first opportunity on my 1000G and any other bike I own in the future would use 10w. At this point, other than maybe for first hand experience, I think I wasted my time trying 15w and 20w and would not recommend it to anyone.
