i have a 78 gs750 that i was changing the oil in. i took the forks off and took the plug out of the top and pulled the top spring, the spring seat, and the lower fork spring out. dumped out the oil pumped the fork a couple of times to make sure the oil was all out and replaced the oil. now one fork is hard to push up and down, but the other one will slide down with ease. did i mess something up doing it this way like a oil seal or the anti friction du ring? is it possible that there is air trapped and the oil will push it out slowly or am i going to have to tear them down competely? and last of all my manual says to put in fork oil till it measures 8.1 inches does anyone know what it equals out to in cc for each side? sorry for so many questions this is my first bike and just worried i am going to do something wrong putting it back together. thanks in advance for any help you can give it will be greatly appreciated.

The fork oil height needs to be set with the forks fully compressed and the springs removed. Did you set up yours this way?Ed

yes i had the springs out and the forks fully compressed but now one of them is hard to pull back up and i have not put the springs or fork cap bolt back on yet. have i messed them up? is there an easy fix for this?Comment

why is one hard to compress and pull back up and the other one is not? do i need to take the one apart? i just put the oil in and i have not put the springs or fork cap bolt back on yet so there should not be any pressure on them i cant figure out what is going on. one i can move in my hand and the other one i have to push down with it on the floor and have someone hold it down for me to pull the upper fork back up. any thoughts on this?Comment

i dont know why but it was just stuck. i took the seal off and the retainer clip and poured oil around it and worked it up and down and now it is moving freely again. i put the springs back in and the cap bolts and it seems everything is working fine. there was some rusty looking sludge underneath the seal between the two fork peices maybe some of it got pulled in between the forks and was causing it to stick, but it is fixed now thanks nessism and cowboyup3371 for trying to help me figure out what the problem was.Comment
