    1979 GS750L, 17" rear rim???

So after reading countless pages and look up charts I got a FANTASTIC deal on my tires. I got the front and rear as a matched pair, modern tread and I was rev'ed up to get them installed.

SO I drag my butt outside in 94* heat today, start taking apart the bike.. Got the rear tire assembly off, dismount old tire.. got to put new tire on.. WTF, the 110/90-18 I ordered online does not fit!!!!! The factory tire was a 4.50H17..

So I really want to run my tires i ordered.. I have riden my dad's BMW with them and they are the best all around tire I have ever ridden on. So it there a 18" rim that will fit my 79 750L?

My 1980 750L has a 16" rear rim, not sure why yours would have a 17 inch or an 18 inch one. Probably was replaced at some point.

I'm actually not new, but for some reason my account had got deleted I guess. I have had the GS for about 3 years now. I have used your site for a long time, first post I ever made after my intro was how to I fix fuel gauge.

So, is there an actual 18" rim that the GS came with?

When in doubt, check the factory parts fishe... http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm

When you are done checking for yourself you will realize the 1979 GS750L came from Japan with an 18" wheel. If your wheel is a 17" then either someone changed the wheel at some point in your bikes life or your bike is not a 1979. Regardless, I suggest you buy yourself a 17" rear tire and get that thing mounted up asap so you can go ride.

Edit: just checked the factory service manual and this bike came with a 17" rear. Looks like the parts fishe is wrong.

That is what I thought.. No it is for sure a 79, I got an antique plate for it.. I had to have it inspected to get the tax exempt plate!

Ok, so now that I am sure.. Does anyone have a spare 18" rear around somewhere?

kind of odd; I had always thought the rear on my 79 750L looked a little small. Sure enough, it has a 17" rear rim as well.

That's ok, it rides just fine

Just run what you have. It's way more trouble getting a new wheel than a new tire.

Just looked at the factory service manual and it says a 17" rear was standard. My information above about the bike coming with an 18" rear seems to be wrong. Guess it serves me right for trusting the parts fishe.

My rear wheel appears to be a 17'' as well. All the information I could find stated it was a 18, but its reassuring to know that it might have been a factory wheel.

Somehow, I just can't imagine ordering a tire for your own bike without looking to see what was on there.

Truth is, I took it for granted. When I ordered them I was out of town and stupidly ordered them so when I got home my new tires would be waiting for me. It was dumb on my part and I let my impatience get the best of me.
