Thoughts on GS with GSXR Rear

I recently bought an 82 GS1100 that the previous owner had grafted a GSXR rear swingarm and wheel but did not finish. All I really need to finish is a chain and a front sprocket(5/8" or 7/8" outboard).

It seems that I will run into interference with two frame tubes running in that area. I thought to convert to 530 chain to help but I don't think that is enough to gain the needed clearance.

I am considering milling the rear brake locating arm about 1/4" to 3/8" inch and adding a spacer the same thickness to the left side of the wheel to move the wheel over and hence move the back sprocket as well. I think this might work.

Has anybody done this before and do you have any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Maulerman

you woudl need a few more details; what rear wheel, what brake hanger, what swing arm.

usual setup is a 17x5.5" GSXR rear wheel with GS sprocker carrier and 5/8" offset sprocket (no need to machine teh sprocker carrier but go to a thin 520 chain). The spacers would be different due to the GSXR swinger.

Stock and bandit are more common.

Search for Katman posts on all of these conversions.

There is one 1000 with a GSXR rear end on here (1085, big cams etc) that runs a 520 chain to gain necessary clearance...

Not all chains are equal - for example when I researched 520 chains go from 19mm to 26mm - 530 chains go from about 22mm to 27mm. Depends on the chain itself.

You could also relieve the frame & get a plate or something welded back in - you have to be careful to build back in same or more strength than the stocker.

        Follow up

I have determined that the swingarm is from an 88 model GSXR/J bike. I think the wheel is also an 88. The sprocket carrier is the original GS because it is six bolt vs. 5 bolt of an 88 GSXR. I don't know about the brake arm. I did some research and it looks like 520 chain alone might help me avoid frame issues.

I appreciate your input on this issue, I am anxious to get it on the road.

Not sure of the dimensions, but I think some people have used the gs500 sprocket carrier to gain clearance.

If anyone has the demensions, I would greatly appreciate it too. I know the gs1000 sprocket carrier (cush drive system?) is thinner than the 94 gsxr carrier. I just posted a picture of this on my 'what cush with swingarm swap' thread.

Also, using a non-oring chain will give you a little more clearance.

If it is an 88 you can do a 530 chain with a 3/8 offset sprocket. The 88 wheels can only take a 5 lug carrier. 88 rear wheel is 18"x4.50" what size does the wheel say on it?
