Twenty or thirty GSes, maybe fifty, mostly returned from the dead, you don't think a few of them didn't have fenders at one time or another?
But yeah, even the Ls with no fenders, bald tires and no oil in the shocks handled pretty good compared to your Herdly, so you might not notice the difference.

50 bikes?!! Holy smokes, old man.
If you would have bought a Harley you wouldnt have needed to own 50 bikes.
The Harley woulda been the one and only bike you woulda ever needed.sigpic

I don't need fifty bikes. I like to fix dead ones. It's kind of a hobby, when I'm not working or dirt riding. Buy them dead, fix them up a little, make them safe, sometimes make them pretty, and sell them on to someone who needs a good motorcycle. So, yeah, something like 30 GSes, maybe 50, turned a little profit on almost all of them. A few BMWs here and there, and some other Jap crap thrown in too. I could probably do the same with the HDs, and probably make more money since the HD nerds spend so much buying the silly things, but there's a problem. I don't like them. Ugly, loud and slow, and boringly they all sound the same. And the chrome, I really dislike chrome. And tassels. And slow riders almost crashing all the time. And the silly incessant farting noises.
You can have your Herdly.

I still cant help but think you're lacking something somewhere in your bitter little life if you have so much hate for a simple little material item bottled up inside you.
But thats your problem. Something you'll have to work out on your own. Best left off the GS forums.
Just get past it so we can stop overwhelming the entire forums with it.sigpic

Back on the topic... picked up a 1200 x 400 x 2.5mm thick piece of aluminium yesterday. 3mm would've been better, but all they had as an offcut was 2.5mm which should be thick enough I would think.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Started it today
Forgot about this thread!
Got a start on it today:
Yes, it's a horrid way to cut the holes out, but the only method I could think of at the time, and yes my wrist is not happy about the hacksawing and filing...
I ran out of time and my wrist was hurting too much to continue today, and I've left the corners of the hole on purpose so I can use a round file to try to get rounded corners so it looks a little nicer.
Anyway, I'll use this pipe to bend it once I've finished cutting the holes out:
Hoping this turns out ok first time around because I don't know that my wrist would cope with cutting and filing all that a second or third time...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Forgot to update this last night... getting close to done if I can figure out a good way to bend it.
Marked out properly where to bend and marked the holes for the mounting bolts, but I only realised I hadn't marked them just before I finished for the evening so I haven't drilled them yet.
I was going to bend like this but it won't conform nicely to the pipe like this and I tried this just before realising I hadn't marked or drilled the mounting holes:
My thought at the moment is to set something up with a gap of about 30mm and use the clamps to "pull" the pipe down on the plate into the gap which to my mind says it should form nicely to the pipe shape.
It might not work but I hope it will and most of all I hope it bends it right so I don't have to start again.
Once I get the shape right I can then work out the mudguard mounting and round off all the edges properly so it looks a little neater. So far I've just run a file around to get the sharp bits off.
As to final finish, I'd love the brushed look, so I'll have to figure out how to achieve that. I think it's just fine sandpaper in one direction but not sure.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

For better or worse it's done:
I need to take a file to the mounting holes as they're too far apart by about 1mm or so, but other than that it looks to be not too bad.
The only concern is if I've introduced an issue with fork travel where the guard will hit the bottom triple clamp and will it pinch the tacho cable?
Should be able to do something with the tacho cable and I can always knock some off the bottom of the brace to lower it somewhat.
Agemax, it didn't work out to be a work of art, but it seems to be functional at least...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie
