    Brake stay question

    GS1000 78-80 chain model
Does the brake stay have to be the stock length?
I have a nice chrome one but it is around 3 inches longer. Can this be used?
Obviously the rear brake caliper would be in a different position a little further
    down.

Not really. Rotating the caliper back won't hurt as long as it doesn't bind the brake line. But you will be changing the direction of force on the brake stay arm itself. It is designed to absorb linier stress straight down its length. With the caliper back on the rotar it will be putting some tortional stress on the longer stay. this could lead to bending the stay if it is not strong enough to withstand it.
