'82 450E Rim Widths

Hey guys, I can't believe I can't find this in the factory repro manual, the Clymer, or the Haynes, and a search isn't showing up any results on the forums here either (except for L's).

What widths are the rims on '82 450E's? I know they're both 18" diameter, and I know the stock tyre sizes are 3.00-18 front, 3.50-18 rear, but nowhere can I find the actual rim width...

I know it's stamped on them, but my bike's still at Tranzac so I can't go down and look...

Parts fishe says the rear is 1.85, but doesn't list width of the front. I fit 100 front and 110 back on my old 450 and the sizes seemed fine.

Cheers Ed, I didn't see the rim width in the parts fiche, but I just realised I only checked the front and assumed they didn't show it for either

Essentially I'm trying to determine if a 3.50-18 will be too wide for the front and I figured having the rim widths is the safest bet on trying to work that out...

Going by what I can find, if you found a 100 ok, then a 3.50 should be ok too

Yeah Pete, the front is 1.6". But if you were to switch to the 19" mag, they are 1.85" wide.

Cheers for that Rich... so, providing it is somehow possible for me to acquire a 19" front (and I'm ignoring the amount of prep and paint I would have to repeat ) how does that go with the speedo drive and speedo? I'm assuming one of those would be different? Otherwise I'll end up way slower than what the speedo says I'll be doing if I use the stock 450E ones...

Also, the 19" is of the L and T models right? I need to go parts fiche surfing me thinks...

Well, my first thought was to go digital and get a sensor.......but I bet you could just get the speedo gear for a 19" wheel. Your speedometer could be re-used no problem. Not sure which models use the wheel, but it's quite a few. And don't forget you would need to raise your fender 1/2".

Food for thought: the 19" wheels are drilled and tapped for dual rotors (dust cap on one side) so you could upgrade your forks and get another caliper too.........the madness never stops!

Hmmmm... I will do the aforementioned parts fiche surfing and see what I can work out...

If they're L or T wheels, I will have a hard time sourcing them over here as I've never seen one of them, not sure if they even imported them. If 550's use the wheels, there's a chance of that though.

I'll have to sus the speedo and speedo drive thing out too...

As for the dual discs... man ya killin' me! If I go that path I have to paint fork lowers again as well as a wheel...

Oh, and as for raising the front guard, that is already under investigation as part of the whole scrambler deal... which is why the interest in rim sizes and the 19" wheel so I can get some good dual sport tyres on there...

Ok, quick reverse parts lookup on Alpha Sports says the 19" as used on the '82 450LZ is also used on a crapload of G's, L's, and T's from the 450 right up to the 1000.

Unfortunately, none of the parts I searched including disc, speedo drive, speedo, or axle are a straight swap for anything on the E's.

What that says is if I'm going to do a 19" conversion, I'd be better off hunting around for a 550 front end or something along those lines, so I'm gonna havta scrap the 19" idea. It's just not that easy to find stuff like that over here, and that will also be an even larger delay to the project than just waiting for budget to buy the suspension and tyres etc.

I think I'll just have to talk to some tyre guys here in Brissie and see if the 3.50-18 Shinko 244 isn't too big for the front rim...

Got it back today, and yep definitely 1.60 width on the front, and interestingly enough the rear doesn't appear to be marked, but I haven't had a good look.

Sorry Pete, I just saw this. Referring to the post on 7-19: if I'm not mistaken, the solid rotors and slotted rotors are the same dimensions. So the spacing for the caliper and such should line up. If the axles are the same diameter, the lengths should be similar as well. A spacer or two may need to be worked out though.......

I have a 19" mag from a GS450 in the garage right now and should be getting my 18" mag back tomorrow. If there's any info I can get for ya, just let me know.

Cheers again Rich. For the moment I'll stick with the 18" and see what I can do with that.

The other aspect on the dual discs is that I just forked out for a brand spankers master cylinder from Mikes XS which won't be right for the dual disc setup.

Next step for me is ignition, then it'll be suspension and tyres, so we'll see what happens...
