    No-tube swap

    1980 gs550
Had very old tires so ordered new ones.
Then saw the old were tubed...
I pulled the tube, drilled the hole for no tube, and threw the new tires on.
    Shinko 712.
I'm a bit worried about the durability of a non tube tire on a tube wheel.
    There's just no bead.
    So....
Should I go back to tube or will this be fine?

      What does the wheel say?

      Tube type or tubeless?

Pretty certain that's a tube rim.same ones as my 78 1000.The 83 750 wheels are pretty well marked tubeless. The fact he modded them for tubeless says tube type to me.

My new Avon's say "TUBELESS" .. "USE TUBES ON RIMS NOT DESIGNATED AS TUBELESS"

I've always heard it is dangerous to not use tubes on the older rims...

          ..

            Ugh thats so lame.
Already drilled them out for tubeless valves and mounted them up.
holding fine but ill check the pressure in a few days.
            Any wheel swap suggestions?

Hey, you could maybe go to a truck stop and get a split-rim ring... just kidding.

Can you just fill in/build up the area you drilled with a type of sleeve? I have not looked at the difference... what/how much/why had to be drilled out?.. was the stem opening just too small for a regular valve stem.. or not the right angle..

                  Too small.
It will be no problem going back to tube but Id just like to avoid that.
What tires are even tube these days?

You can use tubes in tubeless tires.

There are lots of GSR folks that converted their tube type wheels to run tubeless. The archives has lots of threads on the subject, included in which all the pros and cons are detailed.

Personally, I run tubes in my tube type wheels. But it's hard to argue against a sizable number of people that converted and have racked up big miles without issue.
