    Rear Shoe Thickness

    Hello Everyone,
    I am a newbie here. so let me apologize in advanced if this question has been asked before, I searched the forum and did not find it.

    I just picked up my first bike (an 85 GS 450L). {It was on my bucket list}. Anyway needless to say it needs alot of TLC. Today I removed the rear wheel to get a look at the rear drum and shoes. The drum looks good and the shoes show no signs of heat cracking pitting etc.

    So before I put it back, I figured I'd write here to see if anyone knows the minimum thickness allowed for the shoes. If these are close to minimum I'll go ahead and replace them.

    Welcome Joe. Basscliff will be along later for the official welcome but why don't you go to http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/ and download the factory service manual from his website if you don't already have it. It will give you all the info you need.

      Thanks for the info. I have that Clymer's manual already.

      Anyway after thinking about it for awhile I've decided to go ahead and replace the brake system (front and rear). If I'm going to go through the trouble of a tear down to check things out, I probably should start my own maintenance history as well.

        The arm that hookes up to the internal brake cam that operates the shoes should have some marks on the wheel hub. If the two marks align it is time for new shoes
