Not to Hijack this thread, but I am looking to do a similar project with my '82 GS650G. Just wondering what tools I will need and if anyone sells a complete bearing kit with seals to do the exchange? Is there a write up available to help? Thanks, Chris

Paintman, invest in a Dremel tool if you don't already have one. It will make the process of getting the old bearings and races out much easier. other than that just your standard metric tools should do the trick.

Old thread, but I'm working on my steering stem and forks so I figured I'd save a new thread:
For the steering stem, the old lower bearing did not have a seal at the bottom, just a washer. I got the same make/model bearing and also bought a seal from Suzuki. Should I still use the washer under the seal?
The upper bearing came in a sealed package but the grease seems sort of dried out and really sticky. Do I need to clean it, or can I just pack more grease and expect it to loosen over time? It seems like a b1tch to scrub all the rollers.
Next, I want to rinse out the forks. If I don't feel like dealing with kerosene are there any other suggestions for a cleaning rinse? I have left the fork seals in for now as my plan is to clean out the old fluid, replace the springs, and reuse the old seals. I might change my mind and swap in some new seals though.
Thanks,
Joe
