    1980 GS450, need advice

    Hi all, I will need to rebuild front calliper and master brake cylinder in next few months, and to replace brake hose.
    Since my bike is overseas and I am in Canada, I would like to get some parts before I head back home.
    Does anyone know how much those kits cost and where can I get them?
    Also I would like if someone can tell me how long is brake line so I can order one to be made for me from braided stainless steel?

    Depending what state they're all in, you'll just need a piston and cup set for the master cylinder and a piston set for the caliper. Both are cheap enough from Suzuki dealers and are better quality than after market ones.

    I get my stuff from Boulevard Suzuki.

    I remember you have a 450E, and I measured the line to get my braided one made by Ressport on eBay in Canada.



    Read the auction and you'll see what measurements and details you need to give them. I measured and compared my stock brake line and these are the details I gave him:

    1. Fittings: #1 and #4.
    2. Length: 860mm (33.86").
    3. Angle: Type A.
    4. Colour: Black.

    Even though I used the stock measurements, I'm not using the stock handlebars but it compares the same as the stock line now that I have it.

        No problems, glad they're handy for you

        Yes, I have an '82 450E and the brake line is the same for the 80 - 82 450E and S models, but the L and T models will likely have longer brake lines.

          I just did the same brake job on my 450 this Fall because I thought the brake felt a little 'squishy' and I think the hose was either very old or possibly original. I ordered about a foot longer ss brake line than I needed and got the full rebuild kits for MC and caliper. I assembled the fitting on the caliper end then ran the line up through the brackets to the MC then cut it to length allowing a little extra for flex. Getting the spring clip out in order to pull the MC piston took some time and also getting the new brake fluid primed was a little tricky. I eventually hooked an automotive vacuum pump to the bleeder valve and sucked the fluid through. It made a huge improvement in the brake feel and I feel better knowing it's all new. Good luck!

            I was at Rennsport on Saturday to drop off my lines for him to make up new SS lines for me.....Great guys to deal with, I have emailed back and forth with Raymond...




            Send them an email, and before you go to the shop call them to make sure they are there....

            Prices are great, I just hope the quality is there as well, I should get my lines by the end of the week. or early next week, depends on when he can ship em out for me, I don't feel like doing the 45 minute drive out there again....LOL

              I will call them for sure before I go there even though they are not very far from my place.

              What I wanted to ask you, is there any place here in GTA where I could get master cylinder rebuilt kit, and front calliper rebuilt kit?

                Unfortunately, I don't have that answer.....so far I have been ordering stuff from Z1Enterprises and this place seems to be good on prices as well - http://www.partsnmore.com/

                    same bike same rebuild-just ordered from Bike Bandit

                    I'm doing the same rebuild on a 1980 GS450ST. I just ordered a 34" Goodrich universal stainless steel brake line, 20 degree and straight 10 mm banjo bolts, and EBC organic brake pads. Total came to less that $100. Decided not to replace master cylinder, although Bike Bandit had OEM cylinder and piston at what seemed a reasonable price. Will let you know if it all fits together.

                        For the universal 34" stainless brake line, banjo bolts, extra washers (a good idea), and brake shoes you need to look under aftermarket part for that bike. No point in buying oem brake lines from 30 years ago. I got the Goodrich, non-DOT-approved lines since I was told by a good mechanic here in town that it makes no difference. The banjo bolt business can be confusing. You will need the 10 mm hollow banjo bolts (20 degrees for master cylinder, straight for caliper). I chose not to replace the other banjo bolts, those that require specifying a thread pitch of 1 mm for 1980 bikes.
                        For the master cylinder and piston, find the correct schematic and part number under "OEM parts" for that bike.

                        No guarantees that all of this is correct, since this is the first time I've done it myself.
