Difference between GS100L and GS1000E Triple trees

Im working on a 1979 GS1000L and converting the front end over to 79 "E" forks. Its my understanding that the rake of the steering neck is the same between the two but the "L" had axle leading forks. My plan was to swap in the "E" forks using the stock L lower triple and an extra "E" upper triple that I had laying around that has the bar clamps removed. I put the forks through the "L" lower triple but the holes in the upper "E" triple didnt line up, meaning there is some offset in fork tube holes between the two models.

My question is this, would there be handling issues if I used the "E" forks with the "L" triple trees, axle spacers, and hardware? Are the brakes different as well or can I use any calipers/rotors from the GS1000 family?

What other differences are ya'll aware of between the GS1000 model range, other than cosmetics?
