    GS850GN(uk)

I am changing the fork oil this w/e. Stripped the forks out, and simply taken the caps out and springs then up-ended them to drain over night. Didn't want to strip them completely because I didn't want to disturb the seals. My question is - how much oil do I put in? 360 mls in total came out, the Haynes manual says 213mls ea for uk bikes, 251 for US. How ever, the original handbook says 251mls. Anyone know for certain?

    Which year Nick?

Make sure you swill them out thoroughly. I bet there's loads of crud that has settled out in the bottoms.

    Edit. It's a GN so it's a 79.

Use the level method rather than capacity. Springs out, tubes fully pushed down, forks dead upright. Fill with fork oil until the level is 140mm from the top. Get it as accurate and as even as you can.

Oh, an 79 forks will come to bits completely without disturbing the seals. It'll make cleaning all that gunge out a lot easier if you do split them.

Cheers Hampshire. It is indeed a '79. Thank you for the help, I shall have a play in the morning. Thanks again.
