    Fork Spings GS1000

    Hey...

I have measured my GS1000 front fork springs and according to my results of 412mm on both springs and the service limit of 416mm, then i reckon mine need to be replaced, however they look fine and the bike before resto had only done 35,000 miles....

    What would anyone suggest????

I suggest you cut off 4" of coils and replace the lost height with a PVC spacer. This will increase the spring rate and lessen or eliminate the need for adding air to stiffen the fork. Another option is installing Progressive fork springs. Either way, it's a worthy upgrade.

For PVC spacer read blue water mains pipe as used by the water companies - it's perfect for the job (as long as you get the small diameter stuff of course). Now all you'll be doing is driving around looking for a burst main they have just repaired and tossed a couple of feet offcut in the ditch..... Failing that - B&Q etc. The S model uses a steel spacer to make up the gap - spring length on them is 351mm.
