    Fork caps...kind of stumped?(pic)

    Bike is 78 gs750EC
    --------

    What kind of fork caps are these???
    I've looked in the manual/bikebandit and it looks totally different.

    What is this from?






    The holes appear to go down into the fork, as you can see the Oil leaking out....and it smells like fork oil.

    Those "appear" to be homemade air adapters/caps ?????..which the 750 E didnt have. Theres your situation. Bet the oil in them needs changed based on how dark that dribble is. May be worth tearing them down and getting a check on spring length, the right amount of new oil, and new seals while your at it. Front end problems such as speed wobble, pulling, or rock hard shocks coming thru the bars are afew things you want to avoid before they cause trouble when your riding.

      They were available in the early '80's and I bought a set.
      It included an equalizer tube that runs between the two caps, a pressure gauge and a shrader valve for the other cap.
      They are still on my '79 GS750E to this day but, the holes were plugged and gauge removed when I installed the Progressive Suspension Springs as the air was no longer needed.
      When they came out, they were a big IMPROVEMENT over the Suzuki factory set-up found in some of the other models that required filling each tube separately and hoping to get the pressures the same on both forks.

        Like so...



        The plug on the left, used to have the gauge.
        The one on the right, ran a tube over to the other cap and the fill valve was outboard.

          Must have looked pretty out of place and cluttering to the area..

            The gauge is the size of a quarter Chuck.
            Most people never noticed the improved set-up at all.

                Merc if you need to ditch em, I have some stock 750 caps. They're not the prettiest but they'll do what they're supposed to. Yours for shipping

                  The current set-up works so well in fact, even with the 1100 engine in the frame,
                  that I haven't bothered to change it over to 37mm forks. (I have plenty of those around here.)

                      Good info guys, it's making sense now.

                      The PO was an engineer for Ford and GM, and the gs750 was his unfinished project. I'm still finding strange things and modifications every time I look closely. He left me boxes and boxes of extra parts, so sometimes I have to piece it together.

                      I already have the Oil, Seals and Caps for the rebuild...just gotta check the springs!
                      The caps just threw me into a loop, because my other GS's didn't have it, and I didn't wanna tear it apart without getting more advice,ha.
