The shocks are 13 1/2 inches long while the bike is on the center stand. Guess I"ll need to consider my options. I'm thinking a set of '82 click-turn adjustable shocks would be cool. But would I be better off get a brand new modern set?

For now I'll probably leave them. (ugh) The wife controls the budget and as she has reminded me many times already, I can work on it this fall/winter when I can't ride it anyway. Damn her logic.

No need to mess with the exhaust..
You'll notice from the pictures below there is very little clearance for the bottom connection.

No need to mess with the exhaust..
    But of course...

They are obviously aftermarket, they may be much better than what you would replace them with. How well do they work?
      Anyone recognize this shock?

Life is too short to ride an L.

I dont really have enough experince to know if they are working well or not. They seem fine.

I would be fine with them if they didn't block the chain guard.
You can see in the picture below. The finger is pointing to where the rear part of the guard bolts. My crude drawing shows how the lower end of the shock is in the way. I'm not even entirely sure the other end will have much better clearance.

OMG those are so wrong it isn't funny! Don't ride it like that! The chain looks rusted as well...Geez, every time I look at those pics I see something else wrong. The passenger pegs are on wrong as well...I gotta stop looking..

I see something stamped into the body of the shock.. what does it say?

Kinda looks like an old Fox shock.

Look to me like they're off a Honda trail bike, XL series (XL185 / 250 I think), early - mid 80s. If they are then they are meant to be 'the wrong way up'.

Most street shocks need the reservoir at the bottom... or bad-news.

Since they have narrow adjustment gap between the adjuster and the bolt, I believe Hampshiredog is correct. These are definitely a motor-cross style shock.

                Ditch them.

Well you guys are just full of awesome news. I've priced out some Progressive 12 series shocks. What is the consensus on them? I have to imagine they'll fit and ride better than my apparent motor-cross shocks (SMH).

I've been trying to source some used shocks. Would shocks from an L bike work or are they shorter/softer?

They appear to be Fox Street Shocks.... I had a similar set on my bike. Vintage shocks of decent quality, provided the spring rate is right for you. I noticed you have yours on the lightest preload setting, so I'm assuming they aren't under sprung, like mine were. If they aren't leaking oil & you're happy with the ride, seems a shame to spring (sorry) for new ones. Not sure why your set interferes with the chain guard....there were no issues fitting them on the 1100. And, that is their orientation on every bike I've seen sporting them....they aren't upside down.
Speaking of upside down shocks, I suppose the Marzocchi piggy-backs on my bike now, would give you fits!
