how far up/down the fork does the seal go

I have my forks in bits now and there is some pitting, what is the lowest down the fork the pitting can go before the seal will come in contact with it....ie seal travel on fork

    cheers for any help

If you pop the stanchion back in you can test it - just push it as far in as it goes and that is the maximum position. In day to day use you can add roughly an inch and you should still be safe.

3 to 4 inches above the top rim of the lowers i would think is a safe area as a general rule.

If pitting gets too bad, in lieu of replacing the tubes, many have had success sanding them down with extremely fine sandpaper and filling in the pits with either a JB weld or...and sanding smooth, then use gaiters like the ones on my bike in my sig.

there are a few pits but you can hardly feel them....going to sand down gently with wet & dry then try and feel them...if not then will give it all a try

That only removes them from sight.

They will steill tear up your new seals unless you sand or file them smooth.

Removing the sharp, raised edges will prevent tearing nof the new seals, but there might be an ever so slight oil leakage due to the pits transferring little bits of oil in them.

Gaiters will only hide the mess, not prevent it.

well the first fork is in bits and the tube has polished up well....if you look at it with a magnifier you can see a couple of very small pits but I can't feel any in the area of the seal....so I'm well happy for the first tube...second one tomorrow

Looks like you'll be ok then. I was speaking to Philpotts yesterday and they have 5 week backlog for rechroming so if you end up needing them doing it's quite a wait (though HCP might have less of a queue).
