    77 GS 400 wire wheels on 1980 GS400 - Direct fit?

    Hello all!

Looking at these bikes the wheels look like they might be interchageable but are they?

I would like to buy a 100% unmolested 1980 gs400 I found for sale but I want wires wheels on it.

The best way to know is to look at the online parts fiches and compare axle part numbers, speedo gearbox part numbers, drum brake part numbers, etc.

If some of those crucial items are in common, then it'll make it a lot easier.

However, as long as the axles are the same diameter it should be doable.

Having said all that, I'm reasonably sure it would be a reasonably simple swap as most things chassis wise are very similar from the early 400 onwards into at least the early '80's 450's...

Ok so there isnt any proven knowledge on this?

So I guess it's better to find a whole parts bike with wire wheels rather than just buying some stray wheels then...

Someone's probably done it before, but seriously, the parts fiche will be the easiest way to check it out if you don't have one handy to check for yourself...

most of the gs wheels are easy to swap i think. The only difficulty i can think of is the possible drum to disc or vice versa situation. Front wheels for sure are easy with only a single spacer needing changing to go between gs850 and gs550 front end. I think we can infer that the 750 and 1000 will have the same situation on the front of the 550.

I would just check the spacers and otherwise assume it is swappable. I would be surprised if it werent as I assume the 400 wheels are probably identical to the 550.
