    Front Brake Drag

    Perhaps someone has already touched on this but I can't seem to find anything through a search so any tips or hints would be appreciated...

    I'd like to reduce the brake drag on my front brakes. As I am new to these calipers I really don't know how to chase drag out and am looking for some sound advice.

    If there is too much drag then a rebuild and flush is in order.

    How much drag are we talking? You may have a sticking piston if it's a lot. This is common. When the wheel is off the ground and you try to spin it, how much does it turn? A revolution or two? There should be a little friction between the pad and rotor when the brake is released. This is just self-adjusting at its best. This should allow a few revolutions I would think. Normal would be having the wheel slowly come to a halt. If you spin it and it stops quickly then there's a problem.

      A non ABS hydraulic brake system on a motorcycle is pretty basic. Excessive drag and poor braking performance is an indication the brake system should be overhauled because of neglect (not necessarily from you... likely from a PO). A good cleaning and replacing consumable parts is cheap insurance against brake failure.

      My advice is if you don't know the last time the brake system was serviced now would be a good time to refresh it. Clean all the gunk out of the caliper and master cylinder, flush the lines and fill with fresh fluid at the very very least.

        Don't forget to make certain that the tiny little hole in the master cylinder is open.

              Replace the brake lines too. They develop scale inside and the rubber ages. Tons of options for teflon/stainless brake lines, or get new OEM lines.
