Anyone running 200x50x17 on Gs850 Hardtail

Using a 200x50x17 Rear Wheel on Gs850(79) Hardtail and thinking of putting Pirelli Diablo 200x50x17 on. Any opinions on that?..with regard to handling or wear?. Do not know correct torque setting for Rear Wheel Locking nut?..(Remember its a Custom Wheel and a Hardtail,..will that make Standard Torque Service Setting invalid?). Any previous experience of using a wheel and Tyre, this size, would be helpful. Ta Shades.

Ooh boy! The responses should be interesting....taking a very comfortable riding 850G and converting to a hardtail....and then putting a fat oversized Harley rear tire on what used to be a pretty good handling bike with the original 120 or 130/90-17 rear. You might not get too many helpful answers.

About the best I can do for help is to say that torque values are dependant on the type(s) of metals used in the fasteners as well as the diameter and pitch of the threads. If one of your parts is used as part of the fastening system, you have to take that into account, too. For example, you may be using a steel bolt, but if it threads into an alloy part, the alloy is going to be your limiting factor.

Overall, not much is really going to change from stock settings. Most of the stuff that hold the wheel in place is probably still original, so nothing will change.

I do believe that nobody else has done this, mainly because nobody has found a practical way to put such a wide tire on a shafty.
Please tell us how you managed to do this, and, above all else, PICTURES.

        U 4 real?

Converting to chain drive using GS750 cases? Fitting offset drive shaft so wheel clears the torque tube? Offsetting the rear wheel mounts to achieve the same result? Offsetting the engine in the frame so tire will clear the torque tube?

All these remedies and the fitting of such a wide tire, will just cause dire handling problems.

Why not just buy a Harley?

Hi All, Thanks for your replies. Can I just say..that all the work was done, BEFORE, I got my hands on it...So this is not a `Mea Culpa` moment,..I`m just trying to give an`Old Gal`, a bit of a new lease of life...with a Strip Down, Rewire and Rebuild....and a bit of T.L.C., in her Twilight years. This bike was bought with Good Intentions in mind. It`s 9` 8" long so, it`s not going to get chucked about. The frame is supposed to have been Professionally made...and I rode it 176 miles home and the handleing was about what I would expect. I`m sure I`ll open a few boxes of worms as I go through the job,...but ..I `ll just wait and see how it all goes. Thanks .

I would love to see some pics of the bike. I haven't seen many hard tail GS bikes.

              Especially 9 1/2ft long ones!

I second the request for some pictures.

Cheers, for the interest thats being shown. I`m going to have to keep you in suspense over the photographs. Only when it`s finished ..and ..it`s `My Bike`. Otherwise, I`m just sending a photo,..of `Someone elses Bike,... I can tell you, it already attracts attention,..but I want a mechanically sound bike, too. When I was on my way home from picking it up (176 mile ride), folk on the Highway were slowing down to take pictures, as they passed. When we stopped for Coffee, we got a laugh at the folks, in the CarPark, pretending to be just `Walking by`, and trying to take Photos, of it. One old, `Deadhead type`, was particularly amusing... So,.. sorry to keep you all in suspense... but.. Thanks again.

In response to the title question, why would you want to? HARD-tail.

Now you have piqued my curiousity.

Whatever you do, document the tale with lots of pictures to show us the before and after.

Hi Big D, Will do....Hi,7981Gs, I`m an Ex-Serviceman. About 2 years ago. I was watching a T.V. programme about British Troops serving in Afghanistan. I was struck by the story of a L/Cpl, who was badly injured in an incident. After the programme, I decided to try and do something, to help, raise funds for Servicemens Charities. Coincidently, later that night, I was watching `American Chopper`, (The P.O.W / M.I.A. Tribute Chop,episode)...and an idea, started to form. To cut a long story short,..I set out to get my hands on a Chop that I could use to help promote and bring to the attention of others, the work of Service Charities. I had no set idea, about Engine, etc,...it was an outrageous style, I was looking for!. I`ve managed to obtain this Chop, ..and although, its Taxed, Tested, etc,...it needs work done on it,..just to make it mine,...and hopefully,..improve. So, it`s just a case of what I ended up with,...could have had any engine,...been any bike....Hopefully, when its finished it will meet with approval. Cheers, Shades.

Alrighty then...the GS gods forgive you for modding the 850G for a good cause, but someday get a nice stock 850G and enjoy the ride as is all day long for selfish reasons. ...we still like pics too.

If it's still a shaftie and the axle is still steel, I suspect the stock torque setting will still be fine. The axle on a GS850 only has to hold the assembly together -- it doesn't perform a clamping function.

However, I don't see a way to use any GS850 bits to fit a rim that wide (unless you're happy with an epic bodge like a rear wheel several inches off-center), so it's most likely that the rear end is from a large modern shaftie, perhaps a BMW or Gold Wing.

If you can't tell what the rear end came from, a good place to start would to determine what the axle is made of (steel or aluminum) and the size of the threads (diameter and thread pitch -- for example, 18 X 1.5 MM or whatever.).

Hi BWringer, Thanks for that info. The rear wheel won`t be coming off, for a couple of weeks yet...I need to be able to move / roll the bike at short notice, to allow a mate access in Garage. Basically, just trying to collect any helpful information, that might come in handy. I will follow your advice when I start the work...in the meantime, I have been calling in a few favours...and things are beginning to look good.
