Tried a newer front master cylinder

I'm rebuilding an '82 GS1100G. Great bike and I love it, but as everyone here knows brakes have improved since this bike was new.

So I have new discs and pads from Metalgear, new seals and bolts from Suzuki, new stainless lines from Goodridge, and today I installed a new M/C from Suzuki - I think it's from a V-Strom. I went into a local Suzuki and tried some of the brakes on their new bikes and found one that looked like it would work as it was on a bike with twin discs and similar bars. And it was a doddle to install on my GS1100G with Renthal bars.

Now it may be my imagination, but I seem to have more range between on and off now. I am getting a better feel on the lever. Plus now I have an adjustable lever so it doesn't have to feel like I am pulling right up to the grips. I like it.

Has anyone else tried this? I am still running the stock calipers and pistons, but the new M/C seems to really help with feel. So I doubt the braking is MORE, but it seems to feel more usable. Maybe the M/C piston has a longer travel?

It may just be a smaller diameter piston, which needs to move farther to move enough fluid to put the brakes on. Another benefit is you will get more brake pressure with a given finger pressure with the smaller diameter. It's just a mechanical advantage thing.

Now put Salty Monk's twin pot brake conversion on and move your braking into the nineteen nineties.

Ok - sounds about right. I looked into Salty Monk's brake conversion - even bought some calipers over Ebay. That was the only bad deal I ever had on Ebay...

I'm pretty happy about how this has worked out.

Can you post a part number for the MC?

Not 100% certain, but it looks a lot like it is 59600-42F00. I can ask the store I bought it from if you like. But the picture on the microfiche looks very close.
